"What IS Self Hypnosis?"

What do YOU think self hypnosis is?

It’s hypnosis that you do to yourself, right? Okay, so then, what is hypnosis?

Most people think they know, but when they are pushed to explain, they squirm and wiggle and say they
guess they aren't sure.

Sometimes, it's because they believe they will be labeled weird just for knowing about something so… well…
bizarre. Sometimes, it's because they assume hypnosis is too obscure for the ordinary person to
understand... like quantum physics or cellular microbiology.

Actually, it IS a bit bizarre.

And it is more like quantum physics than most people would guess.

And the average person DOESN’T understand it… anymore than s/he understands electricity.

But like electricity,
that doesn't stop the average person from using self hypnosis all the time…probably
every day.

When was the last time you went to a family event expecting to have to endure the same
old/same old and almost couldn’t make yourself stay until it was over?

Think back to a time when you took a trip to a place you had been eager to visit for years and
discovered it was even more delightful than you expected.

I wonder if you remember a time when you had a date, or a job interview, or a performance
evaluation that you just knew was going to turn out badly. You may have talked about it to your
friends. You certainly worried about it. In fact, you probably imagined a dozen different variations
of suffering while you were waiting for the appointed time.

Well, maybe your event didn’t come out just exactly the way you planned, but, the more detail and realism
you put into your “mental rehearsal”, the greater the probability that a large part of the results matched
what you imagined.

Because… you were practicing a form of self hypnosis.

You were giving yourself instructions to create an event in accordance with your expectations and intentions.

“No way!” you say? “I wasn’t in any trance!” you say?

Oh, but you were.

Anytime you are inventing the future or remembering the past, you are not in the present, are you? If you
are making stories in your head, you are in a trance. Your trance may last only a few minutes, but you have
temporarily abandoned the here and now for the experience you created in you mind. That’s called “trance”
and defined as “a condition of great mental concentration or abstraction.”

And,
weren’t you giving yourself “suggestions” about the outcome?

Self hypnosis is all about imagination and suggestion. It is pre-living your outcome in your mind as if it
were already fact. It is telling yourself what you expect to happen until it actualizes.

Anyone who EVER says things, aloud or in their heads, like….

    o        “I’m so disgustingly fat.”
o         “My boss never gives me any credit.”
o         “My kids never listen to me.”
o         “I’m always out of money a week before payday.”
o         “There aren’t enough hours in the day to get all my work done.”
    o         “I wish I could _____, but I just can’t stick with it.”
o         “All the men I meet are self-centered slobs.”
    o         “If I were younger….”

…is practicing the most destructive kind of self hypnosis.

Recognize anyone you know?

So, you already DO practice self hypnosis, don’t you? Hey, it’s okay. It’s normal. All humans do it.

But, like with electricity, if you don’t handle it properly and respect its power, you can get seriously zapped.

So, if you are going to do it,
doesn’t it make sense to do it right? Wouldn’t it be worth investing a few hours
to learn how your mind actually works so that you make it work FOR you, instead of against you.
