"Change

Is there any point in talking about how smoking causes cancer,
emphysema, or heart disease
? I don’t think so. If someone is still
smoking after all the media attention to smoking's links to those
diseases, that person has convinced themselves that the facts
don’t apply to them.

And, they might be right.
Temporarily.

When nothing awful happens as a result of THIS cigarette, humans
tend to convince themselves that they are EXCEPTIONS. The “rules”
may apply to other people, but not to them – at least, not until the
very far distant future. Like a couple centuries from now.

And, it’s true. One cookie does not make you obese. One drink does
not make you an alcoholic. One cigarette does not give you lung
cancer. You have to suck up a lot of them before the consequences
become obvious.

But that is NOT true of some of the
other consequences of smoking.

Smoking is EXPENSIVE. And, you have to fork out the money BEFORE
you can smoke. So, the money is an
immediate loss. Depending on where
you are, it costs you a quarter or more for every cigarette. For a pack a day habit, that’s
$1460 in one year
. For a pack and a half, you lay out $2190. Or more.

Smoking takes a lot of TIME. How many of you smokers complain about how stressed you are, how
there is never enough time in the day to get everything done?
What could you do with an extra 1 ¾ - 2
½ hours a day
? That’s how much time you take to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, at 5 – 7 minutes a
cigarette. When you quit, i
t’s like gaining an extra month every year.

Smoking STINKS! Do you spend a lot of time (and money) attending to the odor of your breath, your
clothes, your car, your house? Smokers smell BAD to the rest of the world. Like, from five feet away, you
smell bad. If you don’t know that, you know a lot of very polite people. You might
get a lot more hugs if
you smelled better.

Smoking wears out your body. Are you stressed a lot? And chronically tired? Nicotine stimulates the
adrenal glands and cuts the oxygen supply to your brain and body. How well do you think your car would
run if you soaked your air filter in soot and poured aviation fuel in your tank?

Got a lot of
indigestion and heartburn? Think it’s from the stressful life you lead? You could be right. On
the other hand, cigarettes may be causing most of the stress and all of your indigestion.

Aches and pains? No, that’s not a joke. It’s amazing how many of them disappear or improve in a few
weeks after the cigarettes disappear.

Do you
hate the cold? Do your hands and feet and ears sting and hurt when you’re outdoors in winter?
Are your hands and feet cold on all but the hottest days, especially when you are sitting still? Guess
what? Nicotine constricts the blood vessels, and those little capillaries feeding energy to your skin are the
biggest losers.

That is also why your skin is gray and
wrinkles faster than it should.

Oh, yes. And
how’s your sex life? Maybe your should know that the same effect of smoking that makes
you feel cold and causes premature wrinkles also makes it more difficult to have a good sex life. Especially
as you get older. And, it tends to be a lot more noticeable in men. And, after awhile, it isn’t reversible
anymore because the blood vessels lose their elasticity.

That’s a summary of the immediate physical problems caused by smoking that you could reverse in a very
short period of time. But, for most ex-smokers,
the really big benefit is the improvement in self
esteem
.

Your self-respect soars! You no longer feel like a loser, a second-class citizen, or something a step
above a wino. Quitting isn’t easy, but more than half the adult population has done it. That proves it can
be done. And you can do it too. And, it’s something you will feel good about for the rest of your life.

Quitting isn't easy, but it's worth it. The short term benefits AND the long term benefits are the best thing
you can do for yourself.
