| 'Why don't New Year’s Resolutions Last Until the End of the Month?' Did you know that each time you break a promise to yourself, you make it easier to break the next one? Sure you did. As soon as you stopped to think about it, you knew it was true. Habits result from repeated acts and thoughts, and you know that each time you repeat an act you are one step closer to a habit. Breaking habits are what New Year’s Resolutions are about, aren’t they? And, haven’t you made a habit of breaking your New Year’s resolutions? So, when you’ve spent big chunks of your life forming the habit of breaking your New Year’s Resolutions to break your bad habits, that means you’ve got to break the bad habit of breaking your promises to yourself BEFORE you can expect to be able break the other bad habits, right? Or, you can stop making New Year’s resolutions. And, actually, that’s a pretty good idea. Habits (good, bad, or indifferent) wear a path in the brain which continues to get wider and deeper with each use. Habits are unconscious, not conscious, and your conscious mind is usually too slow to intercept the process. Your conscious mind has to stop, concentrate, analyze, evaluate, and choose an alternative behavior. Your unconscious mind is so lightning fast that it makes you grab the kid beside you and jump back on the curb before your conscious mind sees the truck running the red light. It can also stuff half a donut in your mouth or smoke two cigarettes before you even notice. And when you do notice, the disgusted resigned YOU snaps “Oh, #*@!”, finishes the donut or pack of cigarettes, and mentally kicks yourself for being a hopeless miserable failure….again. But, be honest, doesn’t it make you feel kind of relieved? Doesn’t it eliminate the tension of anticipating your inevitable slip-up. Don’t you feel more comfortable, knowing you don’t have that to worry about when you are going to fail, anymore? Well, but, what about that part of you that really does want to succeed - does want to lose weight/quit smoking/stop yelling at your kids? It really IS real, isn’t it? Doesn’t it deserve a chance to succeed - for everyone’s sake? If you want to give it a real chance, the first and most important step is to pick a time to change that has no association with failure. Like your birthday. Or Friday. As in, “ I don’t smoke in the house, in the car, or on Fridays.” As in, “I don’t eat chocolate on Tuesdays and Thursdays because my birthday gift to myself is to be two sizes smaller by next year.“ As in, “New Year’s Resolutions may be traditional, but Easter Resolutions seem to have better timing for me.” Does it work? It increases your odds about a 213% . But only if you want to succeed. And believe you can. (Two subjects to be covered in future articles.) And, when you are ready to give yourself a real chance to succeed, make your changes in your subconscious mind, the part that controls your habits. Through hypnosis you can replace negative habits with positive ones (very important, since nature abhors a vacuum). and replace inappropriate beliefs (like you don’t deserve it). Hypnotherapy, Self-hypnosis, and MindChanger ToolKits can make a big difference in your life. For more information, call (717) 509-5550 or email leemengel@changebyhypnosis.com. |
