When gravity makes our feet stick to the floor, we call that science, but is it? Doesn't it seems pretty magical when you stop to think about it? Electricity: is it really science... Or is it magic? What about life, that mysterious force that isn’t, until we are born, then is, and then - since death happens to every living thing - someday isn’t again? (Or is it?) Is that science or magic? Would Readers Digest, Scientific American. Harvard Medical School, the National Institute of Health, and the American Cancer Society endorse the effectiveness of hypnotherapy on a wide variety of disorders and discomforts if they were not satisfied with the scientific proof? Hypnosis doesn't seem important enough to rate up there with gravity, electricity, and life, but it can disturb some people more than any of those subjects do. Hypnosis is a natural state of concentration similar to what you experience when you get lost in a good book or a movie. It is popular for weight loss and quitting smoking. It is also effective treatment for a lot of habits, addictions, phobias, pain management, stress control, and performance enhancement. You have to wonder why some people get alarmed about something that was approved by the American Medical and Dental Associations in 1958. That was such a conservative era that Donna Reed wore dresses and high heels to run the vacuum cleaner on her television show. Of course, we have to give the entertainment media credit for a lot of the misconceptions. They invent monsters out of dinosaurs that have been dead for millions of years and create creatures like ET that exist only in the imagination. The imaginative possibilities of rearranging a person's thinking patterns fascinates them for obvious reasons - controlling how people think is the power they desire most. And, it makes a great story. However, the "stories" have distorted the hypnosis process so badly that most people are not able recognize it as being just an extension of the daydreaming they did in seventh grade and the highway hypnosis that gets them home most days without ever noticing whether they stopped at the red lights. And, many people would be disturbed to know that television is the ultimate hypnosis inducer - within 30 seconds your brain is producing alpha waves, which is what happens in a trance state. That might give you a clue as to why you have all that stuff in your garage, attic, and closets that makes you wonder what you possibly could have been thinking of when you bought it. All of us slip naturally into left-brain alpha states several times a day. It is an essential part of our natural body rhythms, like the waking/sleeping rhythms. Auto-hypnosis, or self-hypnosis is very closely related to day-dreaming, meditation and prayer. Hetero-hypnosis, hypnosis directed by another, requires the continuous cooperation of the subject. The instructions to the subconscious are referred to as "suggestions" for the very good reason that they will be rejected if they violate the subject's beliefs or ethics. Trained Hypnotherapists are professionals who work directly with the subconscious levels of the mind where emotions originate. This allows for astonishing successes when conventional attempts have failed. Hypnotherapy can help people overcome problems which cannot be helped through working with the conscious mind. That looks like magic to a lot of people. Significant research is and has been taking place in universities around the world, demonstrating that hypnosis is real and that use of hypnosis can have real measurable effects on the brain and other tissues of the body as well as affecting behavior. Hypnosis has been slipping quietly into mainstream medicine for the last ten years because new technology makes it possible to actually photograph the changes it makes in the brain that affect healing and pain management. That’s science. So, what is hypnotherapy? Magic or Science? If you put a pen in the hands of an untrained two-year old, she will probably scribble randomly for a little while and then get bored. We already know what happened when Shakespeare got his hands on a pen. Most of us are too similar to the two-year-old in understanding how to use our minds to good effect. What Shakespeare produced was a synthesis of method, understanding, and application. That's what hypnotherapy strives for.
