             MindChanger NewsLetter

                                                                                                                                 December 1, 2005

Welcome to the MindChanger NewsLetter.

You may enjoy the new articles that will be posted on  www.changebyhypnosis.com in the next week.
PLUS, I’ll be adding some tested and re-recorded CDs for Healing and Procrastination. (These were
designed a couple years ago and I have used them myself…and, yes, procrastination IS one of my less
productive habits. “I work best under pressure” is sometimes another way of saying “Fifteen minutes to
deadline is a pretty good motivator.”) The second World Hypnosis Day is coming up in January, so expect to
hear more about that closer to the end of the month…and  now….

I
t’s THAT time of the year - The “over-indulgence” season: If you feel like you are being swept along in a
raging tide of obligation that knocks you over with waves of Stress and Expense and drowns you in vein-
clogging food, mind-numbing drink … and STUFF… you are not alone.

It is okay to grab on to a sanity preserver and kick your way out of the flood. In fact, that’s the ONLY
sensible thing to do.

THE GOOD NEWS IS, YOU’RE IN CHARGE.
YOU CHOOSE TO BE THE VICTOR… OR THE VICTIM!

National Women’s Health Resource Center (NWHRC) did an on-line survey, and nearly 2/3rds of the
respondents reported being depressed during the holidays. Women said that the terms that instantly come
to mind when thinking of the holidays are “stress” and “anxiety”, not “family”, “gifts”, or “holiday cheer”.

The women who responded said they invented excuses to avoid shopping, decorating, attending parties,
and giving presents, relying on over-indulgence in food and drink to help hold the depression at bay.

So, while you may not be surprised that the holidays tend to be a lot less “HAPPY” than we pretend…

Things are not as bad as they seem.

MYTH: the suicide rate goes up during the holidays.  A 26 year study proves that’s not true. Suicide rates
actually go down between Thanksgiving and New Years.

HOWEVER…the same study shows that cardiac death rates PEAK during the holiday season, and they
suspect that delay in seeking medical attention is a major contributing factor.  (…so tell me again…just
exactly WHAT was it that you decided was so important that it was worth dying for????)

IN ADDITION: mental stress can raise cholesterol levels in healthy adults.  The November issue of Health
Psychology, published by the American Psychology Society, adds another negative to the long list of the
dangers of stress. It reported on a study from the University of London that shows stress can elevate
cholesterol levels in healthy adults, and there was no significant difference between men and women.

So Give YOURSELF(and everyone around you) the Gift of PEACE this year.

It is up to you to protect yourself. No one is going to do it for you. Understanding some basics about stress
can make it easier.

First, stress is contagious. You can catch it as easily as you catch a cold. It takes self-awareness and
reasonable precaution to avoid being either a victim or a carrier.

Second, stress has become a (rather perverted) status symbol. Some people invent, exaggerate, and
dramatize so they can “be stressed”. They need attention and don’t know a more effective way to get it.
These people are more infectious than real cases of stress because they have an abundance of spare time
that they use to contaminate everyone they can waylay. REALLY STRESSED PEOPLE may snap and bark, but
they are usually TOO BUSY TO COMPLAIN.

Third, you can be stressed and depressed, or you can rewrite the “rules” and enjoy the holidays. It’s your
choice. If you prefer to enjoy, these tips will help you do it.

Stress Busters

1        Change your expectations – “perfect“ according to whom?
2        Take control. Prioritize. Do number one on your list until it is done.
3        Delegate. Everyone helps.
4        Limit your spending. It’s okay to say “I can’t afford it” (even if you can).
5        Love your relatives but eliminate what and whomever you don’t enjoy.
6        Say “no”. Pretend regret if you need to, but mean the “no”.
7        Plan easy meals.
8        Take care of yourself. Sleep, eat lightly, exercise, (see below) get some sunshine.
9        Talk slower.
10        Stand up straight. Forgive everyone, especially yourself.
11        Laugh. Remember, this too shall pass.
12        Turn off the TV (see below)
13        De-stress DAILY with self-hypnosis, relaxation CDs, meditation, and/or music.

Which brings us to the commercial break….As some of you already know, I have an UltraRelaxation CD (26
mins.) that was specifically designed to pull the plug on stress. It is relaxation building upon relaxation
building upon relaxation culminating in suggestions for good health, and you don’t even have to pay
attention for it to work. Just allow yourself to melt and puddle and wake refreshed.
It will be available on
line in a couple days for $29.95.  It makes a great gift!

(In some cases, daily use has been so effective at normalizing blood pressure that several people reported
reducing or eliminating medication.  You must work WITH your doctor, if this is your goal. This is not
something you should do without medical supervision!)

Exercise for the Mind and Body
                               (The first “below” mentioned above)

Excerpted from Yahoo News, Nov 6: Duke University studies indicate that regular exercise is at least as
effective as standard anti-depressant medications in reducing the symptoms of major depression.

Duration does not seem to matter as much as regular workouts.  However, the studies indicated that 30
minutes of aerobics 3 – 5 times a week reduced depressive symptoms by 50%.  (And, you also look better,
have a lot more energy, and your mind works more efficiently….Yes, you have time…in fact, you can’t afford
to NOT make the time!  Consider it a gift to your family and friends.

                                         Turn off the TV

 (The other “below” mentioned above)

Two new studies demonstrate that the hours you spend in front of the tube have a direct correlation to
your spending and your weight, and both can be major stressors, can they not?

Dr. Shor, of Harvard, author of The Overspent American, says that for each hour of TV watching per week,
the average American spends about $200 per year. Two hours a night increases spending $1000 a year.
Why? Because you tend to believe what those folks on the tube own, do, and wear is “normal” and you
imitate them.

Another study, from the National Weight Control Registry, of 5000 people who lost at least 30 pounds and
kept it off for more than six years watched less than 10 hours of television a week. And, they discovered,
those who increased their TV viewing were more likely to gain back the lost weight.

REAL HYPNOSIS… all hypnosis is self hypnosis and self hypnosis is focused concentration. Jaime
Smart, a UK NLP trainer collected the following techniques that are wonderful for QUIETING THE
MIND…
Your mind and body are one system. Because your thoughts are expressed as internal dialogue and
your internal dialogue creates tension and tiny movements in your tongue and larynx, you can often
quiet your mind by interrupting those muscle movements…so try these exercises and notice what
happens…
1) Stick out your tongue & grasp it gently but firmly between your thumb & forefinger. Wait a few
moments as you continue to breathe. Notice how much quieter you become inside. (If coworkers or
friends stare, tell them you are just a bit stressed, and go on to number 2.)
2) Gently place the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth just behind your front teeth
(continue to breathe easily.) Notice how much quieter your mind remains.
3) With a soft, gentle & patient tone, go inside & say to yourself "Shhhhhhh, shhhhhhh", as if you are
soothing a baby. Smile patiently as the chattering settles and relaxes. It may take up to a minute before
you go quiet inside.
4) Go inside your mind & find the volume control for internal dialogue (usually either a dial or a slider.)
If you can’t find one, just imagine one – it will work just as well for our purposes. Now turn the volume
control up and hear the dialogue get louder. Turn it down and hear it get quieter. Then turn it all the
way off.
5) In a firm but loving tone of voice, say "Shut the *!&% up!" inside your head. Repeat as necessary.

                                     December's Law of the Mind

LAW OF MIND/BODY CONNECTION; Every thought has a physical response in the body. A persistent
emotionally induced symptom has a tendency to cause a change in the physical body. Your body IS your
subconscious mind.

...so, monitor your thoughts, keep them happy and positive. Refuse to allow yourself to be manipulated by
the media or perceived expectations into anything that makes you feel over-extended. May all the blessings
of the season surround you with warmth and love...

Peace be with you.
